Armstrong began his career as a pilot in the United States Navy and later became a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the precursor to NASA. In 1962, he was selected as an astronaut and joined NASA's second group of astronauts, known as the New Nine.
On July 20, 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong set foot on the lunar surface, famously uttering the iconic phrase, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Armstrong and his fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a half hours outside the lunar module, collecting samples and conducting experiments.
Armstrong's achievement of being the first human to walk on the moon marked a significant milestone in human history and space exploration. His calm demeanor and professionalism during the mission earned him worldwide admiration.
After the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong left NASA and worked as a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He remained involved in aerospace and exploration initiatives and served on various advisory boards.
Neil Armstrong received numerous awards and honors throughout his life, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, among others. He passed away on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82.
Neil Armstrong's legacy as a pioneering astronaut and his historic moonwalk continue to inspire future generations, reminding us of the incredible achievements of human space exploration and the limitless possibilities of scientific discovery.
